Atletico Madrid want to hijack Chelsea’s move for Elye Wahi

Atletico Madrid are advancing with talks for Montpellier striker Elye Wahi, according to L’Equipe.

Wahi has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea over a move this summer. The Blues want to sign him and loan him to sister club Strasbourg.

However, Chelsea have not made a written proposal to Montpellier. They have only been discussing with the player to convince him about the move.

Los Rojiblancos have spoken directly to Montpellier about the striker. They could negotiate personal terms with the player when they settle on a fee with the Ligue 1 club.

Atletico are in the market for a centre-forward as they are losing two this summer.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have permanently signed Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha from Atletico for £44 million after his loan spell in England.

They could also lose Alvaro Morata, who is closing in on a move to Inter Milan.

Atletico have turned to Wahi, who bagged 19 goals and five assists in 33 Ligue 1 appearances as Montpellier finished 12th last term.

The young striker has developed steadily over the past three seasons and is blossoming into a notable talent.

Wahi must between Atletico and Chelsea ahead of next season.

Another year in France may benefit him before a move to England with Chelsea. However, he could get lost in the club’s loan maze.

Atletico is an exciting destination for the young striker.

Despite manager Diego Simeone’s reputation as a defensive manager, he has helped forwards Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa, Antoine Griezmann, Mario Mandzukic, Luis Suarez and David Villa flourish.
