Gary Neville says Aaron Ramsdale will be banging on door of Arsenal manager after Chelsea draw

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says Aaron Ramsdale will be knocking on Mikel Arteta’s door after Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea. 

David Raya, who replaced Ramsdale in goal, was bailed out on several occasions by his teammates. 

The Blues were in the ascendancy after Cole Palmer scored from the penalty spot in the 15th minute. 

Raya’s mistake allowed them to extend their advantage early in the second half. 

Mykhaylo Mudryk caught the goalkeeper out with a miscued cross that looped over into the back of the net. 

Raya was clearly nervous as he almost gifted the hosts a third goal. His poor pass out from the back was intercepted by Palmer but the striker failed to hit the target. 

Chelsea were on course for a brilliant home victory before Delcan Rice pounced on a howler of a pass from Robert Sanchez to reduce the deficit on 77 minutes. 

Leandro Trossard added another after seven minutes as the Gunners managed to earn a point from the Stamford Bridge encounter. 

Following the match, Neville said that Ramsdale will now be knocking on Arteta’s door.

“If a goalkeeper makes a mistake, that’s the goalkeeper’s problem,” he said on the Gary Neville Podcast.

“The issue is that there is a very good goalkeeper on the bench that hadn’t done anything wrong.

“It surprised us all when Aaron Ramsdale was left out of a game a month or so ago.

“We thought it might be for a couple of games, but now it looks as though David Raya is number one. The problem is he’s started to look nervy and is making mistakes.

“I’ve been there with Manchester United where the manager brought in another goalkeeper for competition – this was the greatest manager of all time.

“It was when Roy Carroll and Tim Howard were there. People might say, ‘they’re not as good as Raya and Ramsdale’ – it doesn’t really matter.

“It’s a case of two goalkeepers of equal ability and you don’t know who your number one is – you’ve got an issue.

“It happened a little bit for England when Tim Flowers was doing brilliantly with Blackburn (Rovers) and David Seaman was there, but quite clearly Terry Venables named Seaman as his number on. He was adamant.

“I do feel there’s a problem brewing here where Ramsdale is going to start knocking on the door saying, ‘get me back in’ and if [Arteta] doesn’t, he’s going to ask to leave.

“So even though it looks like there’s competition for places in the goalkeeping position, it won’t last long this. The maximum this will last is a season because the goalkeeper who is not playing or is feeling hard done to will leave.

“I don’t think it can work, and I’m not seeing anything that is telling me it can work. It puts more pressure on the one that’s in because he knows the other guy is waiting in the wings.”

Arsenal preserved their unbeaten start in the Premier League as they showed great resilience to earn a draw at Chelsea. 

However, their slip allowed Manchester City to return to the top of the standings following their 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. 

The Gunners cannot afford to drop many points if they want to end City’s dominance.
