Despite failing to agree Romelu Lukaku’s stay at the first time of asking, Inter Milan have not lost hope of bringing the Belgian back to Giuseppe Meazza in the coming weeks.
As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italians plan to meet their Stamford Bridge counterparts this week to discuss a new loan arrangement for the 30-year-old.
The Nerazzurri are ready to offer €5 million for another season-long loan, but they’re keen to include a buy-out clause so they obtain the option to re-sign Lukaku permanently next year.
Inter sold the robust striker to Chelsea for a mouth-watering €115m in 2021, but the player’s career at Stamford Bridge never took off, facilitating his quick return to Meazza last summer.
While the Blues have reconciled with the damning fact they won’t be able to recuperate the astronomical figure they forked out to bring Lukaku back to London, they won’t let him leave cheaply.
They’ll request around €40m for the outright sale, while Inter are unwilling to go beyond €30m if they manage to insert a buy-out clause.
Even if they agree to meet Chelsea’s request, it would still be a significant markdown on the Belgium international’s blockbuster fee from two years ago.
But the Blues have no choice but to accept a loss-making bid if they are to get rid of their expensive flop in a turbulent summer.
Despite receiving offers from Saudi Arabia, the Belgian wants to stay in Europe and secure an Inter comeback.
The feeling is mutual, as the Serie A heavyweights want him on their payroll next season despite signing Marcus Thuram.
With Edin Dzeko gone and Joaquin Correa performing below expectations, Inter need another quality option in the final third.
Inter will reopen talks with Chelsea over Lukaku’s return after completing a long-overdue sale of Marcelo Brozovic to Al-Nassr.
Although negotiations have reached an impasse after the Saudis’ lowered their initial offer, there’s still plenty of optimism in the Italian camp that a deal will go through by the end of the week.
