Should Chelsea try to rescue Kane from Bayern nightmare?

When Harry Kane decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur to join Bayern Munich after ten trophyless years, no one envisioned his terrible luck would extend beyond the shores of English football.

However, it appears the England captain may have to wait even longer to end his drought, with Bayern facing the prospect of ending a season trophyless for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign.

Bayern are struggling to defend their Bundesliga crown, with an eight-point gap now separating them from the relentless pacesetters Bayer Leverkusen.

Die Rekordmeister lost the German Super Cup to RB Leipzig and were also eliminated from the second round of the DFB Pokal, so the Champions League could be their final chance at silverware.

However, Thomas Tuchel’s side are also on the cusp of an early European exit after falling to a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

If they fail to turn it around in the second leg, the Bundesliga champions could be heading for a truly historic campaign, but for all the wrong reasons.

When Kane joined Bayern, he admitted that his €100 million move to the Bundesliga was inspired by silverware. Bayern have been German champions for the past 11 years and haven’t gone trophyless since 2012.

Despite this, there appears to be a bitter irony that Kane could lose the title to Leverkusen, who have never won the Bundesliga and last won a trophy in 1993. 

Kane has barely put a foot wrong since joining Bayern last summer, notching 29 goals and eight assists in 30 games across all competitions.

The ex-Spurs star has also broken numerous records and is on course to win the top scorer award in his debut season, but his contributions may not be enough to salvage a trophy.

After Bayern’s damning 3-0 defeat to Leverkusen, Kane’s goalscoring pedigree didn’t count for much and couldn’t save him from a scathing review by the German media.

Despite the backlash, it’s clear that Bayern have struggled to reach their usual heights. 

They relied on Borussia Dortmund collapsing to win the Bundesliga title on the final day of last season, and the title is not in their hands for the first time in over a decade.

Kane’s signing has undoubtedly been successful for Bayern. He has proven to be the replacement for Robert Lewandowski that they craved, but it all counts for nothing without silverware.

Bayern will still consider themselves one of the favourites to win the Champions League and Bundesliga, but with their chances fading away, Kane could be looking for an escape route back to England.

The Englishman remains one of the deadliest strikers in European football and would command a host of suitors if he makes himself available.

Chelsea are one of several clubs who would be looking to pounce, with the Blues eager to land a marquee striker next summer.

Whether or not Kane would choose to sign for one of Tottenham’s biggest rivals is unclear, but his prospects of winning trophies at Stamford Bridge would be higher compared to returning to Spurs.
