As one of the biggest football teams in the world, Chelsea is well-represented at practically every World Cup. In many cases, some of The Blues faithful were quite impactful in memorable matches, including in several World Cup finals. As the entire fan base is gearing up for the upcoming tournament and checking for WC 2026 updates every five minutes, we can spare a moment to honour Chelsea legends who made their mark at previous editions of the event.
This list is by no means exhaustive, but it contains some legendary names that deserve a shout out. Let’s celebrate the history for a moment and remember past World Cup glory days of distinguished Chelsea footballers through different eras.
Peter Bonetti
Let’s start with ancient history. Bonetti was a long-time goalkeeper for Chelsea who was a part of the last England team that won the Cup some six decades ago. Nicknamed ‘The Cat’, he racked up 495 appearances for Chelsea between 1959 and 1979 and is legitimately considered an all-time great. He was named to the squad for the 1966 World Cup, but failed to appear in any of the matches on the way to the triumph. He did, however, get between the goal posts during the next World Cup.
Marcel Desailly & Frank Lebeuf
In 1998, the unexpected run of France all the way to the World Cup win was powered in part by Chelsea personnel. Desailly signed for Chelsea just before the World Cup, where he would go to lead the stout French defence all the way to the final. He did earn a red card in the final, somewhat spoiling his otherwise impressive play and putting his team in peril. On the other hand, Lebeuf was not in starting eleven for most of the tournament, but he played the final match from start to finish.
John Terry & Ashley Cole
A pair of Chelsea legends formed a backbone of the England team at multiple World Cups, so they qualify for this list despite never winning the trophy. The long-time captain of the Blues, Terry was a defensive stalwart during the 2006 and 2010 World Cup campaigns and earned a place on the best tournament squad. He was joined by Cole, whose period in the Chelsea shirt coincided with his peak years. Despite brilliant individual performance, the duo couldn’t help the team reach the medal rounds so their efforts were essentially wasted.
Andre Schurrle
While the German international only spend two brief seasons in Chelsea, he managed to win a World Cup in 2014 while a member of the club. Not only that, but he actively contributed to his team’s victory by scoring multiple times after coming on to the pitch from the bench, including twice in the famous 7-1 semi-finals drubbing of Brazil. The wily forward also assisted on a crucial goal in the finals against Argentina, so his fingerprints were really all over the trophy.
Olivier Giroud & N’Golo Kante
It appears whenever France wins a World Cup, it needs to send Chelsea a thank you note. That was certainly the case in 2018, when a couple of names well-known to Chelsea fans starred for the team. N’Golo Kante was doing what he does best, extinguishing the opponents’ actions before they could become dangerous to French defence. Meanwhile Giroud was an integral part of the team’s attack and helped create space for its stars despite failing to score himself in seven World Cup appearances. You certainly can’t argue with the results, as the tandem lifted the trophy in the end.
